Anna Deavere Smith Brings Her 'Notes' to Pittsburgh

The August Wilson Center for African American Culture's TRUTHSayers series presents Anna Deavere Smith in a solo show Friday at 8 p.m. The playwright, actor and educator was named a MacArthur "Genius" for creating "a new form of theater - a blend of theatrical art, social commentary, journalism and intimate reverie." Ben Brantley of The New York Times said of Ms. Smith, "She is the American theater's most dynamic and sophisticated oral historian."

The filmed version of her solo show "Notes From the Field" had its HBO premiere in February. On television, she appears as Rainbow's mother, Alicia, on the ABC comedy "black-ish" and on the Shondaland drama "For the People." She also is known for roles on "The West Wing" and "Nurse Jackie."
