Winnipeg Pride Says Portage Avenue Is Too Expensive for 2018 Parade

WINNIPEG - Organizers of Winnipeg's Pride Parade say the cost of marching down Portage Avenue again this year is too high, and the parade will take a different route instead.

Floats weaved through downtown including Portage Avenue last year, which was the festival's 30th anniversary.

Pride Winnipeg says it would love to march on Portage again and asked the city about it, but says it was quoted the same cost as the Santa Claus Parade which was around $50,000.

Pride Winnipeg president Jonathan Niemczak says the organization is paying around $11,000 for the upcoming 2018 parade on Sunday, June 3, noting the festival doesn't receive any funding from the city.

The city says the costs depend on a number of factors, including the type of street, number of police required and number of parking spots that are lost. …
