The ball came out of Joe Musgrove's hand well Wednesday. He has experienced no setbacks. A rehab assignment awaits. The disabled list, though, is hard on a newcomer.

"It's been really tough to sit by and watch the guys having fun and playing and going through the struggles and going through the wins and all these things that I want to be a part of and I want to contribute to," Musgrove said. "It feels really good to be on step closer to coming back."

Musgrove threw two innings in a simulated game at PNC Park Wednesday, the latest step in his return from a shoulder strain. The 25-year-old right-hander, who has yet to pitch for the Pirates since joining the organization in the Gerrit Cole trade, threw all his pitches while facing Max Moroff and Elias Diaz.

"It went really well," Musgrove said. "It was really encouraging. I didn't feel like there was any abnormality in the way I was moving and the things I was doing. The ball was coming out clean, the [velocity] was in a decent range, kind of where I was expecting. …
