St. Louis Woman Runs into Burning Home to Save Sleeping Neighbor

ST. LOUIS - Cathryn Stepps was just trying to wash her car.

The 29-year-old was visiting her grandma's house in the 4800 block of Margaretta Avenue in the Penrose neighborhood Friday afternoon before she started her shift for a cleaning company.

But as she prepared to clean her red Pontiac, she smelled smoke.

She turned around and saw smoke seeping out of the bricks of the house next door.

She knew a retired man, Emmett Powell, 69, lived in the house. The front door was open.

"I knew there had to be someone inside," she said.

She ran around behind the house, jumped the back fence and went inside. The smoke was thick so she covered her face with her T-shirt. She checked the bedrooms looking for the man, but they were empty.
