BELLE Vue Aces overcame a tough Premiership test at the National Speedway Stadium as they beat battling Somerset 47-43.

The Aces made a powerful statement in the opening two heats with consecutive 5-1s that set the southerners back.

World champion Jason Doyle lived up to expectations for the visitors, leading the Cases Rebels with an inspirational performance.

Gradually they chipped away at Belle Vue's lead. But the Aces rallied in the latter stages to secure the win.

Craig Cook and Max Fricke are emerging as a quite formidable duo when the chips are down, finishing the job in Heat 15 after two crucial ties maintained their four-point advantage.

Cook said: "It was a tremendous boost for us to start so strongly in the first two heats. We had Somerset right where we wanted them and it really set the tone for the rest of the night. …
