MICHAEL Owen has revealed Sir Alex Ferguson had a fall-back option in case the former United striker rejected the number seven shirt nearly nine years ago.

Owen was released by relegated Newcastle in 2009 and was so desperate to secure a Premier League move his management released a brochure which outlined his 'brand values', 'medical review' and heralded the 2001 Ballon d'Or winner as an 'icon'.

Hull and Stoke were both interested in the former Liverpool goalscorer yet Ferguson, who had just sanctioned Cristiano Ronaldo's world-record transfer to Real Madrid and had seen Carlos Tevez leave, turned to the injury-prone Owen to back up Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov.
