We hardly have the 18th Congressional District's special election behind us before we're facing midterm primaries. Those happen May 15 (for those not registered to vote, the registration deadline is April 16). And only registered party members can participate in that party's primary.

In the primaries, there are typically more choices and fewer voters. Hence your vote is more likely to make a difference in November's choices. But, sadly, only the more politically involved will likely bother. Too often, by November, the rest of us get to choose between major party candidates chosen by party fanatics. If you don't like getting to November and facing a choice between two extremists, you need to get out and vote for more moderate candidates now.

This year, because of our shuffled congressional districts, the "party fanatics" will likely be favored, because many of us "more normals" won't know which district we're in or who are our choices. …
