Rio Forced to Hang Up Boxing Gloves before He Gets in Ring

RIO Ferdinand has hung up his boxing gloves just eight months after announcing plans to enter the ring.

The former England and United captain has been forced to turn his back on his bid to fight professionally after being denied a licence by the British Boxing Board of Control.

The 39-year-old mounted his Defender to Contender challenge last September but has had to abandon his hopes of competing.

"Having been training fourfive times a week since announcing the aim of achieving a professional boxing licence and stepping into the ring, it is with a heavy heart that I am hanging up my gloves on Betfair's Defender to Contender challenge," he said.

"Despite having never felt better physically or mentally, after notifying the British Boxing Board of Control of my intention to apply for a licence, I have received confirmation that they would not be reviewing my application at this point in time. …
