Duquesne Younger in Dambrot's 2nd Year

Article excerpt

It was Tuesday morning and Duquesne coach Keith Dambrot had never had a roster so young.

Six incoming freshmen? The situation merited five nevers.

"Never," Dambrot responded when asked if he had ever been in this situation. "Never, never, never never."

Then, that night, the Dukes got a verbal commitment from shooting guard Lamar Norman Jr. from Wyoming, Mich.

Incoming freshmen tally up to seven.

"I'm not going to use that as an excuse, either," Dambrot said. "I refuse to do that. We need to take a jump next year, as far as wins and losses. So we're not going to make any excuses. We have to turn those guys into sophomores quickly."

Here are the incoming freshmen:Gavin Bizeau, forward, 6-11, Plainfield, Ind.; Amari Kelly, forward, 6-9, Norcross, Ga.; Austin Rotroff, forward, 6-10, Wauseon, Ohio; Dylan Swingle, center, 6-11, Chillicothe, Ohio; Brandon Wade, guard, 6-2, Ann Arbor, Mich.; Sincere Carry, guard, 6-1, Solon, Ohio; Lamar Norman Jr., guard, 6-2, Wyoming, Mich.

The Dukes graduated four final-year players from last year's 16-16 team and four players have transferred out of the program. That included junior guard Tarin Smith, who played for Bob Hurley in high school and left to play under Dan Hurley at Connecticut, and freshman forward Tydus Verhoeven, who struggled to find an offensive rhythm in last year's scheme.

It also included freshman forward Nicholas Kratholm and junior transfer forward Marko Krivacevic, neither of which found much playing time in Dambrot's first year as coach.

As far as players with college basketball experience, that leaves freshman swingman Eric Williams Jr., sophomore Kellon Taylor, who is on a football scholarship, and sophomore guard Mike Lewis II returning, as well as five transfer players who had to sit out this past year.

Whew.

After enjoying a little time off after exams, the team will report to summer workouts in June. …
