Hockey Is a Great Game; Don't Let Infractions Ruin It

Watching the Sunday and Tuesday playoff games this week between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals, I am left to wonder whether the officiating crew on the ice was viewing the same games.

Apparently the referees thought it was acceptable for the Capitals' Tom Wilson (who afterward Tuesday was seen laughing on the bench) to deliver hits to the heads of the Penguins' Brian Dumoulin and Zach Aston-Reese, the latter resulting in a broken jaw and concussion - and not to be penalized during the game for the infractions. I'm glad the NHL has decided on a three-game suspension for Wilson for the hit on Aston-Reese (May 3, "League Suspends Wilson").

In 1992, Mario Lemieux (undoubtedly one of the sport's most accomplished participants - both as a player and owner) called the NHL a "garage league," and unfortunately in 2018 the NHL seems to be looking to revive that reputation. …
