LABOUR maintained its huge majority in the Wigan Council elections - but there were a few surprise upsets for the party.

They lost five seats in total, with a handful of Independent councillors gaining ground in the Labour stronghold.

Independents took four seats from Labour in Atherton, Bryn, Hindley Green and Shevington with Lower Ground.

There were surprise victories for the Conservatives too, in Orrell - taken by Labour - and Standish with Langtree.

Adam Marsh took the latter seat from independent councillor Debbie Fairhurst, and the vote was so tight between him and Labour candidate Debbie Parkinson that a recount was called.

Adam said: "I'm shocked because the vote was so close.

"We thought Labour had it originally. We are really happy that our message went out to people in the community. …
