CREVE COEUR - Haley Longhibler could not imagine the call or text she would have needed to make to injured teammate Morgan Skyles on Friday.

So the Northwest-Cedar Hill High senior and her teammates decided they were going to dig down deep after Skyles suffered a knee injury midway through the second half of Friday's girls lacrosse contest at Whitfield School.

"There's no way I could have told her that we blew the lead and lost," Longhibler said. "Not after she played so well -- and then got hurt.

"We had to win this for her."

The Lions used a gutsy effort down the stretch without their superstar to hold off Whitfield 7-6 in a high-intensity Missouri Scholastic Lacrosse Association match.

Skyles dominated play with six goals and an assist. But she suffered what appeared to be a serious injury to her left knee with 13 minutes and 26 seconds left in the match.

The stunned Lions, leading 7-5 at the time, went into survival mode and held off the Warriors, who dominated the rest of the way.

"It was hard, Morgan is our (key) player," senior defender Rachel Roussin said. "We go to her for everything."

Northwest, which improved to 11-1 with its eighth successive win, stayed the course thanks to the defensive play of Roussin and some excellent saves by junior goalkeeper Sam Stolarski.

"We really pulled through," Northwest coach Abby Feldmann said.

Skyles, who leads the Lions with 43 goals, scored twice in the final 6:45 of the opening half to put her team in front to stay 5-3. She helped pump the lead to 7-5 with her sixth goal of the game just 10 minutes into the second half.

Minutes later, Skyles went down in front of the net, clutching her knee after a scramble for a loose ball. The match was delayed several minutes while trainers helped her off the field.

Whitfield immediately trimmed the deficit to one on a goal by Seylor Switzer, her second of the day. …
