Beefing Up the Promise a Big Donation from PNC Foundation Bodes Well

For the Pittsburgh Promise to work, big names must continue to stand behind it. PNC Foundation stepped up to the plate again last week, pledging $2.5 million over 10 years. That will increase its total commitment to the college scholarship program to $3.8 million.

The Promise wouldn't exist without a $100 million gift from UPMC, a gift the health care giant made in full even though the program wasn't able to raise $150 million in matching funds within the required period. It wasn't for lack of trying, though. The Promise since December 2006 has raised nearly $100 million from various sources, with the city's philanthropic community having been an early and chief supporter. The Promise needs to raise another $65.2 million to keep serving future classes of students and to keep the level of support from fluctuating as it has in some years. …
