Local Breweries Medal in World Cup of Beer

In Nashville, where lots of local brewers have been this week for the Craft Brewers Conference & BrewExpo America, several of them learned Thursday night that their brews medalled in the World Beer Cup, which the Brewers Association trade group describes as the Olympics of beer.

Out of 8,234 entries from 66 countries, here is how Pittsburgh-area breweries fared:

* Penn Brewery's Penn Gold won a gold in the Muenchner-Style Helles category.

* Roundabout Brewery's Heini's Good Cheer won silver for Old Ale or Strong Ale (it also won a silver in 2016, and, like Penn Gold, won at last year's Great American Beer Festival, too).

* Rivertowne Brewing Co.'s Maxwell's Scottish Ale won bronze for Scottish-Style Ale.

Other breweries in the region on the winner's list includes Northeast Ohio's Fat Heads, the North Olmsted outlet of which won gold for South German-Style Weizenbock with its AlpenGlow, and the Middleburg Heights outlet of which won silver for American-Style Black Ale with its Midnight Moonlight. …
