(Emergency-Alert-Test)

The company operating a new national public-alert system for mobile devices is pledging to investigate after the system misfired in Quebec yesterday and was hit-and-miss in Ontario.

More alert tests are planned for tomorrow in the rest of Canada, except for Nunavut.

Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale expects Pelmorex Corporation to learn from the Ontario and Quebec glitches and correct the problems in the warning system.

But he acknowledges glitches are exactly what tests are meant to find. (4)

Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale will be grilled today about the Trudeau government's new firearms bill when he appears before the Commons' public safety committee today.

More than six-dozen people have written to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, urging him to amend the legislation to ban assault weapons like the rifle used by the Quebec City mosque shooter.

Alexandre Bissonnette pleaded guilty in March to six charges of first-degree murder and six of attempted murder for his January 2017 rampage on praying males.

He opened his attack with a .223-calibre Sporter rifle until it jammed on the first shot and then used a handgun. (4)

(Calgary-Police-Assault)

A Calgary police officer has been sentenced to 90 days in jail, to be served on weekends, for using excessive force against a suspect during an arrest.

Constable James Othen was found guilty in February of assault causing bodily harm and assault with a weapon for his role in a traffic stop where Clayton Prince was injured trying to run from police in July 2016.

Prince suffered broken ribs, a collapsed lung, cuts and bruising.

Court also heard when Prince was in the cruiser, Othen dug the point of a key into Prince's neck behind his ear and his injury later became infected. …
