"Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story," 9 p.m. PBS.

A Hollywood star known as the world's most beautiful woman who inspired the looks of Snow White and Cat Woman, Ms. Lamarr was also an ingenious inventor who created a "frequency hopping" communications system to help defeat the Nazis in World War II, a concept that also serves as the basis for secure WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth technologies today.

This "American Masters" special explores her legacy as a technological trailblazer, including through the use of unearthed audio recordings of Ms. Lamarr speaking about her life.

"Bombshell" director/producer Alexandra Dean said the film is largely about how we see people as one thing and our inability to consider they might also be something else.

"We almost have a biological problem that we're dealing with here, that we like to put people in boxes, partly because it's just easier to deal with the multitude of people that you come into contact with every day, and there's a primitive part of our brains that, as you said, puts the basketball player in the dumb box for whatever reason," Ms. …
