TROY, ILL. - Jordyn Besserman proudly displayed the gruesome green and black bruise on her right leg to anyone and everyone.

The Triad junior forward was just as proud of her battle scar as she was of her stellar offensive effort in the Knights' impressive 2-0 win over Chatham Glenwood in the Class 2A Triad Regional championship match on Friday in Troy.

"It hurts, but I like looking at it," Besserman said.

Besserman scored on a picture-perfect shot just 97 seconds into the match and then set up a tally by Sydney Thomas with a well-placed corner kick in the 56th minute to help Troy capture its ninth successive regional title.

Troy (15-4-3), the defending state champion, will face Carbondale (11-8-1) in the semifinal round of the Marion Sectional at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday in downtown Marion. Waterloo (16-2-3) meets Marion (17-4-3) in the other semifinal at 4:30 p.m.

The red-hot Knights have won seven of their last eight and appear well-poised to make a serious run at another championship.

Besserman's toughness and grit have set the tone for this team all season long.

Her ability to mix it up and do the grunt work helps solidify the identity of the hard-working, blue-collar unit.

Triad coach Matt Bettlach calls Besserman, "our energy player."

"I'm not surprised she's running around showing that bruise to everyone," Bettlach said.

"That's how she is -- tough."

Triad senior captain Jody Ellis says Besserman sets a perfect example for her teammates to follow.

"Out there, she works so hard," Ellis said. "You see it and it makes you want to work that much harder too."

Besserman and Ellis have helped fill in some of the gaping holes left by the graduation of five key players from the championship team.

The Knights lost their top four scorers and an important midfielder from that 22-6 squad.

But Besserman, Ellis and senior goalie Mercedes King have hardly missed a beat.

"We knew even before the season that we were going to have to work extra hard because it's not easy being the defending champs," said King, who recorded her 15th shutout of the season. …
