PEP Guardiola had to be reassured after City's first home game of the season left a horrible sense of deja vu.

A 2-0 win at Brighton was a confident enough start to the season but the Blues dropped points the following week when a combination of factors that had plagued the manager's first year at the Etihad reared their head again.

With Guardiola deflated after the game, Khaldoon Al Mubarak stepped up to gee his manager up - even if he had no idea that 18 consecutive league wins would follow.

"Fortunately there were far more highs than lows. A low that was in retrospect a high was our home game against Everton," said the chairman.

"Pep will remember that. We drew 1-1 , it was a very frustrating game. It was all the frustrations we had from the previous season and in that 90 minutes against Everton we went through the same frustrations. …
