'Man with Shotgun' on Rail Tracks but Police Hunt Turns Up a Blank

TRAINS from Crewe to Manchester were diverted yesterday morning following reports of a gunman on the tracks.

Officers were called to Crewe Station just after 7.30am to reports a trespasser with a firearm was blocking the line, a Cheshire Police spokesman confirmed.

But when officers arrived, they were unable to locate him, he said.

Passenger Andrew Barratt, a cyber security consultant, was due to get the 7.20am Arriva train from Crewe to Manchester when he heard an announcement about the trespasser over the Tannoy.

He said: "They stopped the service and said 'we are not going to be able to take off'.

"They said there's been an incident, reports of someone with a firearm on the track. They said BTP have been called. A train driver then said over the tannoy 'there's some idiot with a shotgun'. …
