TORONTO - Police say 16 horses are dead after two barns caught ablaze in Toronto's north end early Monday morning.

Firefighters were alerted to the fire at Sunnybrook Stables by a resident of a nearby apartment building.

When they arrived at the stables at about 3 a.m., firefighters say they found one barn fully engulfed in flames, and another starting to burn.

They say 13 horses survived, and some were taken to the stables at Exhibition Place.

Mounted police helped search the surrounding Sunnybrook Park area for other horses.

Fire services says they do not yet know the cause of the fire, but are urging anyone with information to come forward.

Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg told reporters on Monday that while the cause will remain unknown until an investigation is complete, there is an initial report of fireworks in the area Sunday night and early Monday. …
