Enough of the false equivalencies comparing deaths by car, fork and swimming pool to death by gun.

We added mandatory seat belts and airbags and dropped speed limits, and we saved lives. Not all lives. Just some.

We changed our national posture toward drinking and driving. Alcohol-related auto deaths dropped by nearly half. Not everyone stopped drinking and driving. But lives were saved.

Technology can now deactivate cellphone text features while driving, and more laws restrict the use of cellphones in the car. Statistically? This has saved lives. Not all lives, mind you, just some.

We've tried to set standards for what can be dumped in a river, pumped into the air or added into our food supply, all against industrial and monied resistance. This saved lives.

We don't ban private swimming pools but we do generally mandate safety fencing, restrict placement near electrical sources and increase liability insurance for pool owners. …
