Canada and its fellow G-7 countries, along with the European Union, have issued a joint statement this morning, stating they are united in rejecting and denouncing last Sunday's presidential election in Venezuela.

The election of Nicolas Maduro to another six-year term has already attracted widespread condemnation, with Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland earlier calling the vote "illegitimate and anti-democratic."

Canada reacted on Monday by downgrading our diplomatic ties with the South American nation.

Today's joint statement calls on Maduro to restore constitutional democracy in Venezuela, schedule free and fair elections, release all political prisoners, restore the authority of the National Assembly, and provide for full and safe access by humanitarian actors. (5)



Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will do some scene-setting today in the host city of this year's G-7 Leaders' Summit.

Trudeau will be in La Malbaie, Quebec, where he will take part in two days of events, including barbecues and media interviews, ahead of the meeting June 8th and 9th.

Yesterday, Trudeau spoke with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe (AH'-bay), and both emphasized the importance of G-7 collaboration on global security issues, including North Korea. (5)



There is just a week left until Kinder Morgan's deadline for securing protections to move forward with its Trans Mountain pipeline expansion.

And still, no suitors have emerged -- at least publicly -- to take over the multibillion-dollar project if Kinder Morgan abandons it.

Observers say they don't know who Finance Minister Bill Morneau was talking about last week when he said "plenty of investors" would be willing to take on the project now that Ottawa is providing an "indemnity'' to compensate them for delays. …
