ST. LOUIS - A young boy rescued Saturday morning by firefighters from a burning second-floor apartment was in critical condition at a hospital, authorities said.

St. Louis Fire Department Capt. Garon Mosby said the incident took place about 4 a.m. in the 5000 block of Enright Avenue. The victim was 8 to 10 years old, Mosby said.

The boy's two sisters and their grandfather got out of the apartment on their own, he said. They were treated at a hospital for smoke inhalation.

A man and a woman on the first floor of the two-unit building also escaped on their own, the department said.

Officials said the fire started on the second floor but the cause had yet to be determined. There was extensive smoke damage and moderate fire damage to the building, according to Mosby. …
