The Canadian Press has learned there are three options Ottawa is considering to ensure the controversial Trans Mountain pipeline expansion will be built.

The preferred option is expected to be announced this morning after a meeting of the Trudeau cabinet.

Finance Minister Bill Morneau has already confirmed one option would see Kinder Morgan keep building the expansion, but have Ottawa cover any cost overruns that political interference might cause.

The Canadian Press has learned another option would see the government buy and build the expansion, then sell it -- or Ottawa could buy it temporarily and then sell it to investors to build.

Tim McMillan, president of the Canadian Association of Pipeline Producers, said whatever happens on this project this week is "huge" for the pipeline, the industry, and for Canada. (3)



Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland begins a two-day visit to Washington today, but it's not clear if her trip specifically concerns ongoing talks to upgrade the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Freeland has been a fixture in the U-S capital in recent weeks for high-level NAFTA negotiations with her U-S and Mexican counterparts.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been talking by phone with U-S President Donald Trump and Mexico's president, despite dwindling hope of reaching a deal in time to firm things up before elections in those two countries.

And Canada's reprieve from potentially crippling U-S tariffs on steel and aluminum imports expires on Friday -- and there are fears they could go into effect without a NAFTA deal in place. (3)



As Canada prepares to host the G-7 Leaders' Summit in La Malbaie, Quebec next month, police in Germany say raids are being conducted in Europe as part of an investigation into the riots that accompanied last July's Group of 20 summit in Hamburg. …
