Pickets are up at C-P Rail sites this morning, now that more than three-thousand engineers and conductors walked off the job last night to back contract demands.

The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference said it was unable to reach a mediated agreement with the rail company last night, but insists it's willing to stay at the bargaining table as the strike takes place.

The Teamsters union also said commuter-train services in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver will not be affected by the strike, since trains in those centres are operated by Bombardier and Bombardier employees.

The strike announcement came minutes after C-P Rail said a tentative three-year deal had been reached with another union representing 360 signalling workers, averting a strike by them. (5)



Political experts say relations between B-C, Alberta and Ottawa are certainly strained over the Trans Mountain project.

But they think it's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberals that have the most to lose after announcing plans to buy the pipeline expansion to ensure it gets built.

University of B-C professor Kathryn Harrison says the move could backfire in B-C, where the federal Liberals hold 14 seats -- and globally on the environmental stage amid Ottawa's commitments to fight climate change.

And fellow Professor Margot Young says Indigenous opposition to the project has been fanned, and the federal purchase could prompt further legal challenges.

Premier John Horgan says the pipeline purchase does not reduce the risk to B-C's environment and economy. (5)



Manitoba is more fiery and smoky than it usually is this close to summer.

The province currently has 191 wildfires burning -- well above the 20-year average of 116 at this time of year.

Crews, including 120 firefighters from Ontario and two water bombers from Quebec, are working to keep them in check. …
