Of Mice and Men There's No Excuse for Restaurant Rodent Problems

A rash of consumer alerts related to rodent infestations at local businesses is hardly good for Pittsburgh's image, let alone diners' health. Restaurants and other food purveyors must redouble their efforts to keep mice and rats away during the busy summer season.

As the Post-Gazette's Patricia Sabatini reported Tuesday, the Allegheny County Health Department so far this year has issued alerts about rodent infestations at 13 businesses and closed two places down. That's up from eight enforcement actions last year. The alerts affected establishments in various neighborhoods and covered violations ranging from mouse droppings in the dining room of a fast-food restaurant to gnawed candy bars at a convenience store and rodent urine smells at a dollar store.

There's no excuse for any of this. Sanitation is central to the longevity of any enterprise, especially those serving food. …
