Canada beats China in women's water polo

KUNSHAN, China - Hayley McKelvey scored the go-ahead goal early in the third quarter as Canada defeated host China 5-2 in women's water polo quarterfinal play Thursday at the FINA World League Super Final.

Emma Wright added two insurance goals to help set up a semifinal on Friday against the Netherlands.

"It was essential for us to come out strong in this crossover game and we did that," Wright said. "We had a great defensive game. Our goalie and blockers really stepped up which allowed us to keep China to only two goals. Although we didn't score many goals on offence, we had a lot of good opportunities."

Shae Fournier opened the scoring for Canada in the first quarter before China answered with a pair of goals. …
