1990 June 6: It's the start of an era for Manchester United as defender Denis Irwin transfers from Oldham Athletic for a fee of £650,000.

Welcoming the Republic of Ireland international to Old Trafford is manager Alex Ferguson. Irwin made 368 appearances in 12 years at United, scoring 22 goals. He won seven Premier League titles, three FA Cups, the League Cup, the Champions League and Cup Winners' Cup. It is said that Ferguson regarded Irwin, pound for pound, as his best ever signing.

1977 June 5: Punk trailblazers The Stranglers perform at Manchester's Electric Circus as part of their nationwide tour. They played Wigan Casino the night before.
