¦ June 3, 1971: Coronation Street stars had to learn new skills when the series added a mailorder warehouse to its Granada set.

The fictional distribution centre, across the road from the Rovers Return, was owned by Mark Brittain and employed a number of cast regulars from 1971 to 1975.

Granada TV imported checkers from Great Universal Stores to give the cast first-hand tips. Helping William Roache (Ken Barlow) learn the ropes is 20-year-old Sheila Howe.

The warehouse and a new community centre replaced the maisonettes demolished after the fire which claimed the life of Valerie Barlow, played by Anne Reid.
