FRED was the subject of 'interesting' negotiations between United and Shakhtar Donetsk for more than two months, according to Shakhtar Donetsk CEO Sergei Palkin.

United announced last week that they had reached an agreement with the Ukrainian giants for the transfer of Fred for a fee believed to be around £47m after the midfielder passed a medical at Carrington.

What could have been executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward's biggest summer headache, signing a replacement for retired skipper Michael Carrick, has proved rather straightforward.

And Palkin has now revealed the details behind the deal.

"We conducted the negotiations with the representatives of United for over two months," Palkin told the club's website. …
