2nd Shift Is Missouri's Fastest-Growing Craft Brewer

Article excerpt

Correction published Thursday, June 6, 2018 - Side Project Brewing of Maplewood was the fastest-growing St. Louis area brewer in 2017. A story Saturday in the Business section omitted the brewer based on information from the Brewers Association.

The three fastest-growing craft brewers in the St. Louis area last year were 2nd Shift Brewing, Six Mile Bridge and Perennial Artisan Ales, according to new data released from the Brewers Association.

Of those, 2nd Shift grew the most quickly, to 1,920 barrels of beer produced in 2017 from 1,000 barrels in 2016, a 92 percent growth rate. Six Mile Bridge, a 3-year-old brewery in Maryland Heights, grew by 73 percent, to 902 barrels from 520 barrels. And Perennial grew 42 percent, to 4,721 barrels from 3,328 barrels.

Those three breweries, along with Logboat Brewing Co. out of Columbia (to 6,600 barrels from 4,255), came in as the four fastest-growing craft beer makers in the state of Missouri last year.

Each of those beer makers figures to keep growing.

Libby Crider, co-owner of 2nd Shift, which is based in The Hill neighborhood, said she expected to increase production to 3,500 barrels this year.

Schlafly remains St. Louis' largest craft brewer, producing about 52,000 barrels last year, down from just under 60,000 barrels in 2016.

It's the first time the Brewers Association has released a list of the fastest growing craft beer makers in the United States. No St. Louis or Illinois brewer cracked the top 50. Perennial, with its operations in south St. Louis, has steadily grown its production and markets since opening in 2011. And Six Mile Bridge will begin on June 2 offering its beers in cans, signaling its strategy to grow its retail presence.

"That'll be a whole new revenue stream for us," said Lindsay Sherring, co-owner of Six Mile Bridge.
