Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland ventured into Washington, D-C yesterday for the first time since U-S President Trump and his aides delivered personal attacks against Prime Minister Trudeau for saying Canada won't get pushed around on trade.

After days of taking the high road in explaining plans for measured retaliation to Trump's tariffs on steel and aluminum, Freeland told the U-S Senate foreign-affairs committee that citing "national security concerns" for the tariffs is "absurd" -- and also illegal under the W-T-O and NAFTA rules.

Last night, she addressed politicians, diplomats and academics in accepting Foreign Policy magazine's "diplomat of the year" award.

Freeland won applause when she said preserving Abraham Lincoln's vision as laid out in his Gettysburg Address means fighting back against those who try to hijack democracy.

She said, "Facts matter. Truth matters," and so do competence and honesty among elected leaders.(2)



South Korean President Moon Jae-in says South Koreans strongly support the outcome of Tuesday's summit between U-S President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, and adds any bad reviews of the meeting were from people ``isolated'' from public thinking.

Moon's comments came during his meeting with U-S Secretary of State Mike Pompeo today in Seoul.

Pompeo also said Trump's tweet about North Korea no longer posing a nuclear threat was made "with eyes wide open."

Pompeo insists there will be no sanctions relief for North Korea until it denuclearizes.(2)



Ontario's troubled Liberal party has tapped a potential interim leader, now that outgoing premier Kathleen Wynne has resigned as Liberal leader after the party's dismal showing in last week's election.

The Liberal caucus has unanimously endorsed Ottawa South member of the legislature John Fraser as interim leader. …
