INDY Boonen has revealed he turned down a new contract with United because he wanted to play more games and link-up with former manager Gert Verheyen at KV Oostende.

The 19-year-old forward was rated one of United's hottest prospects at academy level, but made just 12 starts for the reserves as they were relegated from Premier League Two last season.

Having previously worked with Verheyen while playing for Belgium's under-19s, Boonen has decided to return home after nearly three-and-a-half years at United. A decision, he admits, which was 'a bit of a surprise' for his former employers.

"I could have signed a new three-year deal with United but I want playing time," he told M.E.N. Sport. "I previously worked with the coach from the under-19s in the Belgium national team and he is the first-team coach now. …
