Wrestling: Surtin Brings Home Edwardsville's First State Championship

CHAMPAIGN, ILL. - He let out a roar that rattled the rafters.

His shout of joy nearly drowned out the buzzer and the sound of fans inside the State Farm Center.

Edwardsville High junior Noah Surtin had just made school history in becoming the school's first wrestler to secure a state championship.

It was school history and something that he has wanted for a long time.

"I remember when I was eight years old and staring at the wall with all those state placers and I said that there is not one that says, 'First,' I want to be up there,'" Surtin said.

Surtin secured the championship with a 7-6 victory over Dylan Ragusin of Montini in the Class 3A 113-pound division on Saturday evening at the state wrestling tournament in Champaign.

He was joined by three other area athletes to bring home individual championships as Althoff's Danny and Zac Braunagel both became two-time state champions in Class 1A and Cahokia's Rozell Baker captured the 170-pound crown in 2A. …
