(Khill Trial)

Defence and prosecution lawyers are clashing today over whether a Hamilton-area homeowner's military training justified his fatal shooting of a man who broke into his truck at night.

Peter Khill admits he killed Jon Styres with two shotgun blasts in the early morning of February 4th, 2016, but has pleaded not guilty to a second-degree murder, saying he fired in self-defence, believing Styres was pointing a gun at him.

Khill has testified that he spent four years as an army reservist and that he instinctively fell back on his military training when he saw a strange man on his property.

His lawyer says his client reacted proactively but the Crown says Khill's army experience should have taught him never to charge into an uncertain situation. (The Canadian Press)


(Millard Trial)

The Crown is alleging a Toronto man killed his aviation executive father to access millions in inheritance.

But the defence is arguing the death was a simple case of suicide.

Both sides are presenting closing arguments today at the first-degree murder trial of Dellen Millard, who has pleaded not guilty to killing his father, 71-year-old Wayne Millard.

The judge-alone trial has heard that the older Millard was found with a bullet lodged in his brain -- the coroner and police initially ruled the death a suicide. (The Canadian Press)



A local arts group has set up an installation aimed at inspiring hope after Toronto's deadly van attack earlier this year.

North York Arts has hung a series of colourful quilted banners at a civic centre near the stretch of Yonge Street where a rental van mounted a sidewalk and ran down pedestrians in its path, killing 10 people.

The organization says the Toronto Love Project was initiated by local artist Berene Campbell and features long quilted banners "stitched with messages of hope, peace and love. …
