The House of Commons trade committee returns to work on Parliament Hill today to discuss the broad economic pain of the Trump administration's crushing steel and aluminum tariffs.

M-P's on the panel will hear from a dozen witnesses representing metals and auto companies and their unionized workers, days before Canada's retaliatory tariffs are to take effect on targeted U-S imports.

Witnesses will include the presidents of Unifor, the Canadian Steel Producers, and Flavio Volpe -- the president of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers' Association.

Volpe says Trump's threat to impose a 25-per-cent duty on all cars entering the U-S would destroy the economies of several Canadian provinces, as well as Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania -- all states that delivered Trump the presidency. (3)

U-S President Donald Trump revisited past battles last night as he rallied supporters behind South Carolina's Republican governor ahead of a tense runoff election.

He urged Republicans to back Governor Henry McMaster in today's contest for the Republican nomination.

Trump dug into favourite conflicts, including tough trade negotiations with Canada and other U-S allies, his ongoing fight with Democrats over immigration, and his 2016 election victory. (3)

German helicopter crews being relieved by Canada's peacekeeping mission in the troubled African country of Mali say they have struggled with delays in getting approval for life-saving medical evacuations.

They say U-N officials have argued over cost, resulting in hours-long delays in ferrying out injured peacekeepers.

Both Germany and Belgium will end their medical-evacuation missions on Saturday.

A second advance contingent of Canadian soldiers flew into Gao yesterday to prepare for the arrival next month of the eight helicopters and the rest of the 250 military members Canada has pledged to the U-N mission. …
