Stretched Crews Tackle Spate of Incidents

EMERGENCY crews were forced to battle a spate of smaller fires across the region, placing even more pressure on stretched resources.

Areas of burning grass were reported in Altrincham; in Dobcross, Oldham; Ashtonunder-Lyne; and in Tyldesley, Wigan, on top of the major incidents ongoing on Saddleworth Moor and Winter Hill. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said it was 'especially stretched'.

In one case, two teenagers were witnessed attempting to set fire to grass near bushes next to tinder-dry playing fields, police said.

Luckily, passersby rushed to put the blaze out before it could develop.

Police said two youngsters were detained nearby and investigations were ongoing. The incident happened yesterday close to Mount Pleasant Street in St Peter's, Ashton. …
