Flash floods dotted the area after heavy rainfall Monday evening.

The National Weather Service said 1.33 inches of rain was recorded at Pittsburgh International Airport between 7 and 8 p.m. Monday - one- third of the 4 inches of rain that typically fall in July.

Flooding and downed trees were reported throughout the eastern parts of the city and northern suburbs along Route 28 and the Allegheny River - particularly in Aspinwall, Sharpsburg, O'Hara and Fox Chapel, where it was estimated that rainfall totals were in excess of 2 inches.

Route 28 North was shut down at the Highland Park Bridge because of flooding and traffic heading south was being directed to the Fox Chapel exit.

Several vehicles were abandoned along Squaw Run Road, where police patrolled in rescue rafts. …
