(ROW-Missing-Olympian-Fraud)

Three-time Olympian Harold Backer -- who mysteriously disappeared for almost 18 months -- has been handed a 13-month sentence after pleading guilty to fraud.

The 55-year-old former Olympic rower appeared in Victoria provincial court today, where he pleaded guilty to a single charge of fraud over five-thousand dollars.

The former investment dealer was also handed three years probation and promised to pay restitution of almost 162-thousand dollars to five people.

Backer disappeared in late 2015, after telling his family he was going for a bike ride and his whereabouts while he was missing still haven't been explained. (The Canadian Press)

He says it's believed a young woman was swept into one of the pools around noon yesterday and that her boyfriend and another man tried to save her. (The Canadian Press)
