St. Louis Police Department Revives Cadet Program

ST. LOUIS - The police department is now accepting applications for a revamped Cadet Program, designed to attract applicants between 18 and 20 into a career in law enforcement.

The program, funded in part by the St. Louis Police Foundation, will begin Monday. Cadets will get on-the-job training and exposure to various police units, and be eligible to earn college credit. Participants are paid between $13 and $15 per hour.

The goal is to prepare applicants to join the police academy when they turn 21.

The city's police force is down by more than 100 officers from its authorized number, but Mayor Lyda Krewson has said overtime costs eat up any savings the city may have from the unfunded positions. She and other supporters of the Cadet Program are hoping it will help recruit new officers. …
