ST. LOUIS - St. Louisans, prepare to meet her royal majesty Princess Buttercup, a critically endangered baby mongoose lemur who made her debut this week at the St. Louis Zoo.

Buttercup was born March 19, marking the first successful birth and rearing of a mongoose lemur at the zoo. The species is a critically endangered primate, native to the dry forests of northwestern Madagascar.

Now a healthy 3½ months old, Buttercup can be seen in the Primate House hanging with her mom, Dahlia, and generally being adorable.

But life wasn't always simple for Buttercup.

Her first months of life required round-the-clock care and feeding by zoo staff. Her mother failed to rear previous infants, so primate keepers intervened and nursed the little lemur.
