St. Louis Plummets to 40th Nationally in World Cup TV Viewership

St. Louis sure has tumbled in prominence as a national soccer hotbed in recent years. And television viewership for the World Cup, which has been one of the most exciting versions of the global tournament in decades, has mirrored that steep decline.

Heading into the quarterfinals, which begin Friday, the Gateway City is in a tie for 40th place nationally among the 56 major U.S. markets in which ratings are tabulated electronically. This is after the region ranked 33rd two weeks ago.

According to Nielsen, which tracks viewership, 1.4 percent of St. Louis-area homes with a TV have tuned in thus far to the coverage on KTVI (Channel 2) and FS1. That has been doubled, or more, by the top markets -- Washington (4.3) and Miami (2.9).
