PEP Guardiola faces a headache before City's defence of the Premier League title has even begun after the World Cup success of his stars.

Victories for France, Belgium and England in the quarter-finals confirmed that no fewer than seven City players will be involved in the international tournament until its final weekend.

John Stones, Kyle Walker, Fabian Delph, Raheem Sterling, Kevin De Bruyne, Vincent Kompany and Benjamin Mendy are all still in with a chance of lifting the World Cup with their countries, but even those that go out at the semi-final stage will be required for the third-place play-off next Saturday.

Guardiola, keen not to overload his players before the season has even started, has pencilled in three weeks of rest for everyone in his squad.

Those not on international duty this summer will report back for pre-season training on Monday, while those who exited the World Cup in earlier rounds - such as City's Argentine contingent - will start preparations for the domestic season later this month. …
