We shouldn't have been surprised about President Barack Obama's Supreme Court nomination being blocked by Republicans. The last time a Republican-controlled Senate confirmed a Supreme Court nomination of a Democratic president was 123 years ago in 1895. We hear of this "norm" that presidents get some sort of deference in appointing Supreme Court justices, but it's actually a Democratic Party "norm."

During the fight over the Affordable Care Act, I stopped in Sen. Bob Casey's office in Pittsburgh and spoke to a more senior person in the office. I expressed my view that Democrats should behave as Republicans. Should Democrats get control of the Senate, I would block and delay and make Republicans pay a heavy price for Merrick Garland.

Remember that this hyper-polarized state we are in now, stoked by virulent attacks by Russian fake news and right-wing noise machines like Fox, has created a state where we are no longer Americans. …
