Metro Digest: St. Louis Zoo Has New Chimpanzee

Article excerpt

ST. LOUIS > Zoo has new chimpanzee - The St. Louis Zoo has good reason to celebrate World Chimpanzee Day on Saturday: Kijana, its newest chimpanzee.

Kijana (pronounced kih-JAH-nah) is 26 years old and came from the Little Rock Zoo. He made his public debut Thursday after making the trip here in April.

This is the first time since 2006 the zoo has welcomed a new chimpanzee. That year, Rosebud, her daughter Utamu, and Beauty came to live there.

It took several weeks to get Kijana acquainted with his new family, also known as a troop, of eight chimpanzees, which includes two other males and six females. Visitors can recognize Kijana by his silver beard and dark hair. He is smaller than the troop's dominant male, Hugo.
