A raucous and divisive NATO summit concluded this morning in Brussels, with all 29 NATO members agreeing that there is still a common commitment to the military alliance.

Following an emergency session today, U-S President Donald Trump called a news conference and said America's commitment to the alliance also remains strong, after everyone had committed to push up defence budgets.

Trump said leaving the alliance "is unnecessary'' because of all the commitments for more spending he saw around the table.

Trump called it "a fantastic meeting."

He also said he will speak with Russia's Vladimir Putin about election meddling, arms control and its 2014 annexation of Crimea from Ukraine when the two meet in Finland on Monday. (5)



Hurricane Chris is tracking toward Atlantic Canada, and heavy rain and strong winds are expected to hammer parts of eastern Newfoundland today.

Environment Canada says Chris was about 372 kilometres southwest of Sable Island early today and is expected to weaken into a post-tropical storm as it moves northeast over the southeastern tip of the Avalon Peninsula tonight.

Rain warnings have been issued for some eastern parts of the province, where up to 70 millimetres of rain could fall. (5)



An Indigenous group has moved into the North Thompson River Provincial Park near Clearwater, B-C in an effort to block the contentious Trans Mountain pipeline expansion.

The group calling itself the Tiny House Warriors says it is reclaiming an ancestral village their people were forced from many years ago, while at the same time, trying to prevent the expansion of the pipeline through their traditional territory.

Spokeswoman Kanahus Manuel says they will be building tiny houses on the land in an action that has the approval of the hereditary chiefs of the Secwepemc (SEH'-qwap-mooth) First Nation. …
