Man Gets Life Sentence in Slaying of Girl, 17

A Perry North man has been sentenced to a mandatory term of life in prison without parole for the 2016 murder of Daija McCall, 17, of Homewood.

Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge Edward J. Borkowski on Monday handed down the sentence to Douglas Lockett Jr., 20, for second-degree murder in connection with the shooting on Sept. 17, 2016.

Daija was shot in the chest about 100 yards from her house in Homewood after an intended drug deal went awry.

With a pink duffel bag containing what was supposedly about a pound of cocaine, Daija ventured out, hoping to make a "quick and easy" $8,000, Assistant District Attorney Michael Ball said April 13 during Lockett's trial.

Testing later determined that the substance in her bag was not an illegal drug. Mr. Ball argued during the trial that Mr. Lockett and his co-defendant Steven Cansler, then 16, of East Liberty, intended to rob Daija, resulting in the shooting. …
