¦ July 16, 1990: All aboard the Olympic express! Manchester takes its bid to host the 1996 Olympics to Blackpool on a specially commissioned train.

Manchester's spirited campaign came to an end on September 18th when the games were awarded to Atlanta. Also bidding were Athens, Toronto, Melbourne and Belgrade.

Manchester came fifth in the first ballot with 11 votes, beating Belgrade into sixth place.

Unfortunately Manchester were eliminated in the next ballot, coming last with five votes.

The Atlanta games were criticised for overcrowding in the Olympic village, poor food and transport and a general atmosphere of commercialism.
