LIVERPOOL manager Jurgen Klopp has told the critics of City and Germany midfielder Ilkay Gundogan to 'shut up'.

The Blues ace remains under fire in his home country following his pre-World Cup meeting with controversial Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan in May.

During the meeting Gundogan presented Erdogan with a City shirt containing the words: 'With respect for my president'.

That didn't go down well in Germany, given the strained political relations between the two countries.

And Gundogan was jeered by his own supporters during Germany's friendlies against Austria and Saudi Arabia prior to the World Cup.

The City man's summer went from bad to worse when pre-tournament favourites and holders Germany were sent packing during the the group phase of the Russia tournament and headed home in shame.

Steffen Effenberg called for Gundogan to be axed from Joachim Loew's squad prior to their opening game against Mexico, and former Bayern Munich manager Ottmar Hitzfeld said the same. …
