No Payback: House Won't Vote on Cut

WASHINGTON – Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr. will not get a House vote this week on his attempt to cut former Rep. Scott Garrett's salary at the Securities and Exchange Commission from $215,001 to $1.

The proposed pay cut was submitted last week in an amendment offered to the bill that funds the SEC. That proposal was rejected Monday night by the House Rules Committee without comment. The amendment was submitted after the committee's deadline, meaning the Republican majority of the committee had the discretion of whether to allow a vote or not when the spending bill came to the floor this week.

Other late amendments were cleared for votes, leading Pascrell, D-Paterson, to cry foul. He argued that Garrett, a Republican from Wantage who was a frequent critic of the SEC when he served as chairman of a House subcommittee prior to losing his bid for re-election in 2016, had already been rejected by a Senate committee for a different post as president of the U. …
